Being bilingual alone does not authorize one to translate immigration documents

 

Immigration officials may refuse translations that do not follow their strict rules and regulations. This can sometimes mean slowing down immigrations cases and sometimes means applicants have to pay more money to submit their paperwork again.

USCIS has specific rules and regulations for immigration translations. First and foremost, the translator must be certified. A certified translator has been tested on their translation skills and has passed a series of exams to prove that they are a competent translator. The exams include testing on their language pair as well as a specific subject. For example, a certified Spanish to English translator may not be certified to translate from English into Spanish. Also, a certified legal Spanish to English translator may not be certified as a medical Spanish to English translator.
