 Each year on February 21st, the world celebrates what both makes us all unique and binds us as humans – the language that we speak. We also celebrate this day across the world to promote linguistic and cultural diversity awareness.

International Mother Language Day was announced by UNESCO on November 17, 1999 and is also celebrated by the United Nations.

This year’s focus is Local Languages for Global Citizenship: Spotlight on Science.

“Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.” (United Nations International Mother Language Day Microsite)
