One of my favorite activities is to test out Google Translate to get a good laugh.

I should have been working this morning and answering the hundreds of emails in my inbox, but instead I was sidetracked by Mr. Google Translate. Oops. But I did get a good laugh!

I love the great example of “my nose is running.” Native English speakers know this doesn’t literally mean that my nose is out for a jog. Or that my nose is working like a machine would be working. (That would be just weird and make you think that I was a robot of some sort.)

I love to use this example when talking about how humans will never be replaced by machines when it comes to translation. Language is a living, breathing entity that ebbs and flows just like the tide. It’s constantly changing and evolving and our understanding of words and their meaning evolves as well. Machines as they stand today just cannot do that. To prove my point, I asked Google Translate how to say “my nose is running” in Spanish.

Oops.

This time my nose is like a robot and working. Just like a machine. Google Translate is a great tool for certain purposes, but not for a professional translation. To achieve better accuracy and a greater ability to capture the tone and style of the original documents, humans are where it’s at.

USCIS Certified Translation Requirements

As comprehensive immigration reform becomes more of a potential reality in the United States, a question INGCO International frequently answers is what is required for United States Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) certified translations.

Any document that contains foreign language must be accompanied by a complete English language translation.* All documents that are submitted with an immigration application or petition must include a complete translation into English. The translation must also include the translator’s certification and your translator must provide you with a Certificate of Accuracy or the translation will not be valid.

Working with a professional translation provider ensures that the translation is accurate but it also ensures you that your application or petition will not be sent back because you did not follow procedure. A professional translator is certified to translate from one language to another and is prepared to translate your immigration documents. A certified translator will also provide you with a Notarized Certificate of Accuracy so that USCIS officials do not deny your request based on the translation regulations.

It is important to make sure you are always using an acceptable document for your immigration procedure; a summary of a document prepared by a translator is never acceptable and may cause your application or petition to be denied. A translating machine was always a dream ever since different cultures started interacting. It cannot be denied that there was a parallel dream of having one common language. Is that a paradox?

The need might have arisen as fallout of the famous “Tower of Babel” incident as told in the Book of Genesis in the Bible. We are not aware if the story was true, but the essence that men did not understand each other due to the differing tongue was indeed true and to this day the truth holds sway.

Well…Is Google Translate the dream application that can translate 60 odd languages of the world? Truth is, the dream is slowly being realized…..but would it be the perfect solution? Doubts linger, and the answer can be both, a “Yes” and a “No.”

“Yes,” because it can perfectly translate simple words and phrases. They are good if one is chatting on Facebook or messenger services.

But when it comes to complex sentences and expressions that carry barrage of culture centric terms, idioms and more particularly “thoughts”, any translation tool would apparently flunk. And Google Translation tool is no exception to that rule.

But who said Google Translate is not fun? Type “Will Justin Bieber ever hit puberty?” Now translating this to Vietnamese would give the result, “Justin Bieber sẽ bao giờ đến tuổi dậy thì” on the Google Translate screen.

Now do the reverse translation. Copy and paste the Vietnamese phrase and check what it has to say in English….Isn’t it fun!!! Much like the Magic 8 Ball, Google seems to tell us that it’s a no…
